Going Dark

Technology and the Internet have gave way to a more interconnected society, where access to information lies instantly at our fingertips and communicating with another person whether they are in the same room or in an office thousands of miles across the world proves no problem with the numerous platforms available. This instantaneous availability can mean an incessant stream of tweets, texts, status updates, emails and calls for any one person. This stream can be enough to make anyone feel overwhelmed and thus why taking a time out from a technology-dependent world is necessary for many to maintain their sanity.

Taking this time out and allowing time for quiet and contemplation, according to a December 29, 2011 article in The New York Times, has become a much needed pastime for some. A group of Jewish artists agree as they have sponsored the National Day of Unplugging since 2010. This day encourages people to take a break from technology. This year’s National Day of Unplugging will take place March 23-24.
